Advanced Diagnostic Imaging

Today, advanced in-office three dimensional imaging technology has revolutionized dental implant planning and other areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery. 

Conventional two dimensional images are used by the doctors at Champlain Valley Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for routine diagnosis and treatment planning.  In cases where a higher level of visualization is desired, we are able to obtain a three dimensional image of the area in our office. 

The area where these images are used most frequently is in dental implant treatment planning.  We are able to evaluate the amount of bone available for implant placement in three dimensions and with less distortion than with conventional two dimensional images.  Areas of bone irregularity are able to be visualized more accurately on three dimensional images.  We can also more closely measure the bone distances around vital structures such as the upper jaw sinuses and the lower jaw nerve.  Using this technology, we can more accurately plan implant size and positioning, minimizing risk to vital structures.

Another area where this level of imaging can provide more accurate treatment planning is in the assessment of impacted teeth.  These teeth can sometimes be in close proximity to the upper jaw sinuses, the lower jaw nerves, or other teeth.  We are able to see the exact locations of these structures which can be obscured in  two dimensional images.     

Three dimensional imaging is also very useful in the evaluation of pathology of the jaw bones.  We are able to better evaluate the location and extent of bone lesions in a way not possible with two dimensional images. 

While three dimensional imaging does not replace  two dimensional imaging, it does provide an invaluable adjunct when precise bone dimensions are critical for optimal treatment planning.
